Baltimore, MD - Mar. 8, 2024 - Cheers from 130 boys filled TA’s auditorium on Wednesday for the annual CIJE Baltimore Robotics Tournament. Middle school boys from TA, TI, and Cheder Chabad of Baltimore were also joined by boys from YBH who drove in from Passaic, New Jersey for the occasion. Mr. Joseph Saltzman, CIJE Maryland Program Manager, welcomed everyone to the tournament. “I’ve been privileged,” he says, “to work with the local schools in developing and growing the Baltimore robotics program.” And, he points out, “just building a robot and being able to participate in a tournament is a tremendous accomplishment for all the students.” Having spent months learning about robotics and building their robots, the teams were geared up for the tournament and eager to see what the competition had in store.
CIJE, the Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education, is known for promoting innovation and engineering in Jewish schools. The popular CIJE Robotics League brings engineering education into a fun environment. This year’s thrilling game requires robots to navigate the playing field and score points by strategically place blocks in designated goals. Rabbi Heshy Wieder, robotics coach at YBH, is thankful for all the events CIJE organizes and is glad to give his students the opportunity to interact with students from other Jewish schools across the country.
As the scrimmage began, the boys demonstrated adaptability and strategic thinking during their matches. Each team is randomly paired in an alliance with another team, requiring boys to collaborate with peers from other schools. Teams stand out not just for their technical finesse but also for solid teamwork. The top teams maneuvered their robots with precision and skill to advance to the final rounds. It was an evenly matched competition with students from each of the participating schools securing spots in the finals. Ultimately, Team “Bills” from TI and Team 3 from YBH won first place!
TI students Avraham Moshe Pollack, Avrumi Liebman, Reuven Soloff, and Chaim Shmaya Eichorn built the winning robot. “It’s fun” they exclaim, and they also “learned a lot about robots”. They explain how they had to iterate and improve their robot in order to reach their winning design. The first robot they built was slow, could only pick up one cube at time, and could not reach the top of the goal. Their coach, Mr. David Kanter, is proud of how all the teams did a good job and Dr Insel, TI General Studies Coordinator, was amazed by their performance.
Beyond the accolades, the boys took home lessons in teamwork and perseverance. “It was fun, it was a great day,” says Rabbi Yakov Majeski, TA General Studies Principal. He believes CIJE is “a wonderful, wonderful program for our kids and we want to get more and more kids [involved].” The robotics tournament “gives the kids a chance to shine and really feel good about themselves. It builds a lot of confidence, teamwork, and integrity.”
