Baltimore, MD - Jan. 12, 2024  - Baltimore County Fire Department faces a projected overtime budget deficit of $7-8 million due to staffing shortages, according to WMAR2News. The Baltimore County Professional Firefighters’ Association union president, John Sibiga, highlights approximately 120 vacancies in the department, partly attributed to the county's longer retirement requirement. Two fire engines are temporarily taken out of service during weekdays due to staffing issues, impacting daytime shifts in Dundalk and Towson. Sibiga explains that the department faces daily challenges due to these shortages, despite recruiting new applicants and training efforts. The department maintains that these adjustments will not compromise residents' safety or service levels. Councilman Mike Ertel, overseeing Towson's district, believes public safety remains unaffected by the situation.
