Baltimore, MD - Oct. 3, 2023  - The Maryland Department of Human Services introduced enhanced security measures for its food and cash assistance cards after discovering substantial thefts of benefits, according to WMAR2News. A significant security feature is the "lock/unlock" function, available via the ConnectEBT app. This lets users secure their cards, unlocking them only during transactions to reduce the risk of unauthorized use. Following the thefts, the state has reimbursed over $13 million in stolen benefits to affected residents. Furthermore, Maryland is working to integrate microchips into the cards, aiming to be the first state to adopt this added layer of security. The Department is also planning to roll out EBT transaction alerts and has warned users against potentially fraudulent third-party apps.

Cardholders can access the app by downloading the ConnectEBT app on their phone.
