Baltimore, MD - Aug. 28, 2023 - Hospitalizations from COVID have been increasing in Maryland over the past month, although overall numbers remain low, as reported by the State Department of Health, according to WMAR2News. Dr. Greg Shrank, an infectious disease specialist with the University of Maryland Medical Center, highlighted that the virus is still active and causing illness. A potential reason for the rise in cases might be the declining immunity from earlier infections and booster shots. Dr. Shrank emphasized that most healthy individuals would experience mild symptoms from COVID, but those with severe health conditions should consider the booster shot for added protection. Dr. Andy Pekosz of Johns Hopkins suggested that high-risk individuals continue wearing masks in public spaces, and certain establishments like hospitals might mandate it. However, he doesn't anticipate broader mask mandates. Pekosz believes the approach to COVID might shift to treating it similarly to the flu, expecting seasonal surges and possibly annual vaccine updates. The CDC plans to offer further guidance on managing the virus in mid-September
