Baltimore, MD - Aug. 22, 2023 - (WMAR2News) Maryland first responders have launched the 'Blood on Board' program, which ensures medevac helicopters are equipped with whole blood for faster transfusions during emergencies, according to WMAR2News. Since its introduction last month, the program has assisted 23 critical patients, primarily from motor vehicle accidents, but also from other trauma incidents. Dr. Doug Floccare and Sgt. Joshua Heins emphasized the crucial time this initiative provides to patients, allowing them to reach trauma centers for surgical intervention. Maryland is the pioneering state to offer this as a statewide service, made possible through a partnership between various state entities and the University of Maryland Medical Center.
