Baltimore, MD - July 26, 2023 - Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott has nominated James Wallace as the city's next fire chief, according to CBS Baltimore. Currently the Acting Director of the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management, Wallace has a remarkable 30-year service with the Baltimore City Fire Department, holding various leadership positions, including battalion commander. He started as a paramedic before becoming a firefighter-paramedic. The department has been without a chief since last December when Niles Ford resigned amid findings related to the tragic deaths of three firefighters. Assistant Chief of Operations Dante Stewart has been acting as the fire chief since Ford's departure. The report revealed deficiencies in training, communication, and issues with accountability within the department.
