Baltimore, MD - July 19, 2023  - A recent study has revealed that Maryland holds the second-highest amount of student loan debt in the United States, reports WMAR2News. According to ChamberofCommerce.org, the state has approximately 808,600 student loan borrowers, collectively owing around $34.5 billion. This leaves each individual with an average debt of approximately $42,666. Only residents of Washington D.C. were found to have higher levels of student loan debt. The study comes in the wake of the U.S. Department of Education's announcement to forgive federal student loans for more than 804,000 borrowers, aiming to provide accurate counts of eligible payments for forgiveness under income-driven repayment plans. This development follows the Supreme Court's ruling against President Joe Biden's plan to forgive up to $20,000 in federal student loan debt for borrowers earning less than $125,000 annually.
