Baltimore, MD - July 17, 2023  - The Baltimore City Council will consider a resolution opposing rate hikes proposed by Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE), reports WBAL TV). Councilman Zeke Cohen plans to introduce the resolution, urging the Maryland Public Service Commission to reject BGE's multiyear rate plan. Cohen argues that the plan would increase gas distribution rates by 61% and electric distribution rates by 31% over three years, which he believes is unnecessary and costly for ratepayers. He also criticizes BGE's partnership with city residents and highlights environmental concerns. BGE disputes Cohen's figures, stating that their plan would result in a 5% annual increase in rates. The proposed rate increases aim to cover gas infrastructure costs, including gas regulator installation.
