Palestinian Authority (PA) Prisoners' Affairs Minister Qadri Abu Bakr was killed yesterday (Saturday) in a car collision in Samaria.
In an unprecedented move, it was decided to close Highway 5 to traffic to make way for the funeral procession. This is the first time Israeli traffic has been closed off for the funeral of a PA official. 50 PA policemen and security personnel will escort the funeral procession to the cemetery.
The residents of Samaria were surprised by the announcement, which also poses a danger to their security as the Palestinian Authority is being allowed to hold a large event in Area C near Jewish communities.
Samaria Regional Council chairman Yossi Dagan was outraged at the decision to allow such an event within the council's territory, and all this when the security body that will manage it is the Palestinian police. Dagan pointed out that Abu Bakr served 17 years in prison for terrorism, was exiled to Iraq and returned during the Oslo Accords, and devoted his life to inciting and financially supporting terrorists....
