Shabbos Vayechi highlights an important and often overlooked message. As we read about Yaakov Avinu preparing for the end of his life and giving clear instructions regarding his kevurah, we are reminded that planning ahead is not only responsible but deeply rooted in Torah values.Yet for many, end-of-life planning is postponed indefinitely. Even in the frum community, many are unaware of the practical and halachic details that can significantly affect kavod hameis and a family’s peace of mind. When these matters are addressed thoughtfully in advance, families avoid unnecessary stress and uncertainty during already difficult moments. To help the community gain the clarity they need, NASCK is offering two free live workshops over Shabbos Vayechi weekend, presented by Rabbi Elchonon Zohn...

A new round of Syrian-Israeli negotiations is set to begin on Tuesday in Paris, diplomatic sources told Asharq al-Awsat.
According to the report, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot is scheduled to meet on Monday with the Syrian delegation headed by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, ahead of the launch of the talks in the French capital.
The Syrian delegation includes al-Shaibani as well as General Intelligence Director Hussein al-Salama. The negotiations with Israel are taking place with coordination and mediation by the United States, the sources said.
A Syrian government source quoted by the state-run SANA news agency said the resumption of the talks reflects Syria’s commitment to what it described as restoring its “non-negotiable national right...
A Western intelligence assessment shared with The Sunday Times says that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has prepared a secret escape plan should his security forces fail to contain the nationwide protests sweeping the country.
According to the report, Khamenei, 86, intends to flee Tehran with a small circle of aides and family members if he detects desertions or refusal to follow orders.
“The ‘plan B’ is for Khamenei and his very close circle of associates and family, including his son and nominated heir apparent, Mojtaba," an intelligence source told The Times.
Former Israeli intelligence officer Beni Sabti predicted Khamenei would head to Moscow, as “there is no other place for him," noting that the Iranian leader “adm...
Flu activity is continuing to climb across the U.S. as hospitalizations rise, according to newly released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The percent of outpatient visits for respiratory illnesses are now at the highest rate on record.
About 8% of visits to a health care provider were labeled as flu-like illness, surpassing any levels seen since 1997, the earliest for which data is available. Flu-like illness accounts for patients that have a fever as well as a cough and/or sore throat.
These visits are largely among children and young adults. About 35% of outpatient visits for a respiratory illness were among people unde. 24 years old and children under age 5 made up about 20% of those.
The CDC estimates there have been 120,000 hospitalizations so far this...
The U.S. took the unprecedented step Monday of dropping the number of vaccines it recommends for every child — leaving other immunizations, such as flu shots, open to families to choose but without clear guidance.
Officials said the overhaul to the federal vaccine schedule won’t result in any families losing access or insurance coverage for vaccines, but medical experts slammed the move, saying it could lead to reduced uptake of important vaccinations and increase disease.
The change came after President Donald Trump in December asked the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to review how peer nations approach vaccine recommendations and consider revising its guidance to align with theirs.
HHS said its comparison to 20 peer nations found that the U.S. was a...
The Jerusalem Post has received multiple indications that the US is considering some intervention in the ongoing Iran protests. At the same time, Israel is also checking if the removal of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro will make action against the Iranian regime possible.
It appears that Israel was surprised by America's intervention in Venezuela and that this action scrambled Israeli calculations about what might be possible in the Islamic Republic.
Until the intervention by US President Donald Trump in Caracas, most Israeli officials did not view the protests against Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as necessarily approaching the volume necessary to achieve regime change.
In fact, by themselves, the protests are likely still viewed by I...
Jerusalem, Israel - Jan. 5, 2026 - The walls lining the lobbies of the Jerusalem Theater are lined with original works by Israeli artists, with exhibitions changing monthly.
One of the new exhibitions had its opening evening event on January 4, 2026. Aryeh (Ian) Wiseglass, an architect, artist, and photographer, grew up in Manchester and made aliyah in 2005. He lives in Yerushalayim with his wife and three children.
Titled 'Landscapes of the Mind' is a series of small, brightly colored abstract watercolor paintings that have been scanned at a high resolution and printed greatly enlarged.
The opening event featured a lecture by Wiseglass. He included a mention of the works of J.M.W. Turner and Mark Rothko as inspiration.

Minister of Energy Eli Cohen on Monday instructed the Israel Electric Corporation and Jerusalem's water corporation, "Hagihon," to begin the process of disconnecting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) from the infrastructure, while sending pre-disconnection warning letters to the organization's public buildings in the neighborhoods of Ma'alot Dafna and Kafr Aqab.
The minister's directive is an additional stage in the fight to end the activities of UNRWA, which Minister Cohen referred to as a "terror supporter."
Cohen has also instructed that additional UNRWA facilities be located and that the new law, which the Knesset approved last week, be implemented. The law, which was co-sponsored by MKs Yulia Malinovsky (Yisrael Beytenu) and Limor Son-Har-Melech ...

Israel's security establishment is closely monitoring the military buildup trends of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, in anticipation of a potential shift to Phase B of the conflict.
According to intelligence estimates published on Galei Zahal, about three months after the ceasefire agreement, the terror group is continuing to rebuild its capabilities, defying the strict restrictions.
Despite the closure of the Rafah Crossing and the Philadelphi Corridor, and the extended maritime blockade, the IDF has identified three main channels through which Hamas is attempting to restore its strength.
The first channel is the local production of weaponry, which is being carried out on a smaller scale and under harsher conditions than in the past. However, it still allows the production of many e...
A Medical Milestone and a Shared Vision
Last week, Rabbi Yitzchak Ginsburg and Dr. Abed Halaila held a joint press conference that was unexpected and very moving.
A year ago, Rabbi Ginsburg, who is closely associated with Chabad and with many of the “hilltop” communities, underwent a kidney transplant at Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital. Other medical centers had declined to operate on him due to his advanced age, but Dr. Halaila, head of Hadassah Ein Kerem’s transplant unit, reviewed the file of the 80-year-old rabbi and agreed.
“Age is only a number,” he explained this week. “A kidney transplant can be beneficial even at an older age, enabling the patient to continue giving.”
The donor was there through the Matnat Chaim organization. Senior Hadass...
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded this evening (Monday) to the opposition's claims in a 40-signature debate in the Knesset on the government's conduct.
During the Knesset debate, Netanyahu stated: "[US President Donald] Trump and I will not allow Iran to restore its ballistic missile industry and nuclear program."
He added: "We identify with the struggle of the Iranian people. We may be standing at a crucial moment. If we are attacked, the consequences for Iran will be very serious."
Addressing his meeting with President Trump in Florida last week, Netanyahu said: "The President emphasized our shared commitment to disarm Hamas and demilitarize Gaza."
An overview of the passing and burial of Yaakov Avinu, beginning with his concern that lice from the Ten Plagues might affect his body, despite the teaching of Chazal in Maseches Bava Basra that Yaakov was among the tzaddikim over whom decay and infestation had no power. The presentation continues with a remarkable calculation of the period from Yosef’s passing until the burial of his bones in Shechem, 194 years later, and concludes with an analysis of the brothers’ claim that Yaakov instructed Yosef not to bear resentment against them, explained according to the pshat of the pesukim.
Deposed Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is set to make his first U.S. court appearance on Monday in New York after he was captured by troops on Saturday and charged with narco-terrorism.
Maduro, along with his wife, Cilia Flores, is expected to appear at noon for a brief but required legal proceeding. They have been jailed in Brooklyn after the U.S. military seized them from their Caracas home in a surprise raid.
As a criminal defendant in the U.S. legal system, Maduro will have the same rights as any other person accused of a crime — including the right to a trial by a jury of regular New Yorkers.
Maduro’s lawyers are expected to contest the legality of his arrest, arguing that he is immune from prosecution as a sovereign head of state.
The case agains...
