Sullivan County, NY - Three people are dead in an upstate Sullivan County collision that took place late this afternoon.
State police told VIN News that six people were involved in the crash which took place in the vicinity of exit 112, Yankee Lake - Masten Lake, on Route 17.
The three dead are Lower East Side residents Morris Faitelewicz, his wife Beth and their future son in law, Yehuda Bayme of Riverdale.
Morris Faitelewicz was renowned for his volunteerism and was an active member of Hatzolah who was well known as ES17. Faitelewicz sat on Community Board 3, rising through the ranks to become its vice chairperson and also served as citywide coordinator and deputy inspector of the NYPD’s Auxiliary Support Emergency Services Rescue Unit. Commanding officer of the NYPD Auxiliary Volunteer EMS Unit in the area of the World Trade Center, Faitelewicz supervised units at Ground Zero for almost nine months, earning both a Port Authority Exceptional Service Award and a proclamation from the City Council for his efforts.
Beth Faitelewicz, a registered nurse at Beth Israel Medical Center for over 29 years, was not scheduled to work on 9/11 but she walked a mile and a half to Beth Israel in order to be on hand when the anticipated casualties arrived at the hospital, according to an article published in 2011 by Advanced Healthcare Network for Respiratory Care and Sleep Medicine. Living in Lower Manhattan and working so close to Ground Zero, 9/11 played an enormous part in the lives of the entire family.
“Even today, it’s hard for me to go near there,” said Mrs. Faitelewicz. “We had the smell of it for months, the smell of burning, rotting flesh. The dirt on our windows was the same as that from the Holocaust. This was our holocaust.”
The Faitelewicz’s, parents of three children, celebrated their wedding anniversary in June. A post in honor of the occasion on Mrs. Faitelewicz’s Facebook page reads, “Tomorrow will be our wedding anniversary number 33! I am the luckiest woman to be with Morris Faitelewicz, he is a special husband and a very caring dad. Hope we spend many more happy and healthy years together!”
Yehuda Bayme, a Riverdale resident, was engaged to the Faitelewicz’s only daughter, Shani. An office manager at Soufeh Capital Partners in New York City, Bayme also taught remedial studies to elementary school students in Brooklyn.
