On Thursday in Rome Israeli president Reuven Rivlin and his chief of staff Rivka Ravitz, an Orthodox woman, went to visit the Pope.

When one meets the Pope the rule is to shake hands and bow down. When it came time for Ravitz to do so she explained to the pope that according to Jewish law a woman is not allowed to shake a man’s hand and that she can’t bow to a cross, which he bears on his necklace.

The Pope then covered his cross and bowed so as to show proper respect to her beliefs.
