A kosher bakery in Montreal’s Saint-Laurent borough was destroyed by fire early Wednesday morning, less than 48 hours after the business was targeted in a separate attempted arson.

Mimimelon, located on Saint-Louis Street, was first targeted around 11:30 p.m. Monday. According to the bakery’s co-owner, Jennie Volfson, surveillance footage showed a person attempting to enter through a rear door before throwing a liquid against the building and setting it on fire. The first fire was extinguished before causing significant damage.

Around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, police and firefighters were called back to the same location after a second fire broke out. Approximately 60 firefighters worked for about two hours to bring the blaze under control. The bakery was destroyed, and neighboring businesses were also affected. No injuries were reported.

Montreal police said evidence found at the scene indicated that the fire was deliberately set. The department’s arson squad and hate crimes unit are investigating. Police have not announced any arrests or established a motive.

The hate crimes unit was brought into the investigation because of the bakery’s ties to Montreal’s Jewish community. Volfson also told investigators about an incident in September in which a person with a covered face allegedly entered the bakery and made a threatening comment about Jews before leaving. Police have not said whether that incident is connected to the fires.

The owners described the destruction as a total loss and said the fire has affected their family, employees and neighboring businesses. The bakery employed 22 people.

The investigation remains ongoing as police review surveillance footage and work to determine who was responsible for the two fires and whether they were connected.
