New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was booed and called a “traitor” and “sellout” Wednesday night as pro-Palestinian protesters disrupted an October 7 memorial vigil in Manhattan’s Union Square. The vigil was organized by Israelis for Peace to remember victims of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack while also honoring Palestinians killed during the war in Gaza. Around 200 protesters arrived at the event, according to amNewYork, outnumbering the organizers and prompting police to place barricades between the groups.

The protesters shouted over speakers and chanted “Long Live Hamas,” while some carried Palestinian flags and chanted “Normalize the intifada.” Mamdani was also targeted by the protesters, who accused him of betraying the Palestinian cause and being complicit in what they described as genocide in Gaza. Mamdani remained at the vigil until it ended but did not speak.

The confrontation came hours after Mamdani released a statement marking the third anniversary of October 7. He acknowledged that Hamas killed more than 1,100 people and abducted 251 hostages, but much of his statement focused on Israel’s actions in Gaza, which he described as genocide, apartheid and war crimes. The statement drew criticism from Jewish leaders, while the protesters at the vigil criticized Mamdani from the opposite direction, arguing that he was not taking a strong enough position against Israel.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, who has endorsed Mamdani, condemned the disruption. “On a day of profound pain for so many New Yorkers, disrupting a vigil for the victims of October 7 while waving the flags of terrorist organizations is absolutely despicable. Jewish New Yorkers deserve to mourn in peace, free from hatred and intimidation. There is no excuse for this. None,” Hochul wrote.

The incident left Mamdani facing criticism from opposing sides over his approach to the Israel-Gaza conflict. The Union Square gathering, which was intended as a memorial, instead became a contentious confrontation between pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian demonstrators.
