Baltimore, MD – September 16, 2026 - The sixth through eighth grade talmidim of Yeshivas Toras Simcha visited United Hebrew Cemetery in Halethorpe, Maryland, for a meaningful opportunity to connect with the legacy of some of the great Torah leaders of the previous generation.

Among those buried at the cemetery are HaRav Shmuel Yaakov Weinberg, zt”l, and HaRav Yaakov Yitzchok HaLevi Ruderman, zt”l. With many of the YTS rebbeim having learned in Yeshivas Ner Yisrael, the visit took on added meaning as the rebbeim shared personal memories and lessons from the Gedolim they had known.

One rebbe shared a particularly moving story about Rav Ruderman. On Rosh Hashanah, Rav Ruderman once left the Beis Medrash to walk home, despite the difficulty he had walking, after realizing that he had mistakenly taken his Rebbetzin’s machzor. He wanted to make sure that she had her own personal machzor from which to daven. His concern for his Rebbetzin outweighed his own physical discomfort, as well as the fact that leaving would cause him to fall behind the tzibbur’s davening.

For the talmidim, the story offered a powerful lesson in thoughtfulness, sensitivity, and putting the needs of another person before one’s own convenience.

YTS Menahel Rabbi Hillel Shepard shared another lesson based on the halacha that one conceals his tzitzis in a beis hakvaros. Since the niftarim can no longer perform mitzvos, we do not openly display before them a mitzvah they no longer have the opportunity to fulfill.

Rabbi Shepard pointed out the profound message contained within this halacha. The niftarim are already in the Olam HaEmes and understand with perfect clarity the eternal value of every mitzvah. Even in a cemetery containing great tzaddikim, the halacha still applies. They, too, would treasure another opportunity to perform a mitzvah.

The visit left the talmidim with a timely and powerful reminder as Yom Kippur approaches: how fortunate we are to still have countless opportunities each day to perform mitzvos, grow in our avodas Hashem, and accumulate eternal zechusim.
