Jerusalem, Israel - June 17, 2026 - The President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi, received the Friends of Zion Award during a special ceremony at the Friends of Zion Heritage Center in Jerusalem, Israel, on Tuesday night.

The award was presented by Friends of Zion founder Dr. Mike Evans in recognition of Somaliland's support for Israel and its plans to establish an embassy in Jerusalem. Diplomats, business leaders, and guests from the delegation, from Israel, and abroad attended the event.

Accepting the award, Abdillahi described it as a symbol of the growing relationship between Somaliland and Israel.

"It is a great honor for me to receive the Friends of Zion Award," he said. "This award symbolizes the growing friendship and strengthening ties between Somaliland and Israel. We are committed to deepening the relationship between our peoples and building a future based on cooperation, mutual respect, and friendship."

Evans praised the Somaliland leader for advancing ties with Israel at a time when the Jewish state faces significant diplomatic and security challenges.

"The decision to open an embassy in Jerusalem sends a clear message of friendship, mutual respect and cooperation," Evans said.

He also expressed support for broader international recognition of Somaliland, a self-governing territory in the Horn of Africa that declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has yet to receive widespread international recognition.

Former Israeli President Shimon Peres helped establish the Friends of Zion Award. It has been presented to world leaders recognized for strengthening relations with Israel and supporting the Jewish state on the international stage.

Founded in Jerusalem in 2015, the Friends of Zion Heritage Center promotes efforts to combat antisemitism and strengthen support for Israel around the world.
