Baltimore, MD - May 30, 2024  - (WMAR2News) Starting June 1, a new Maryland law will impose strict penalties on street racing. Offenders will be required to appear in court and could face up to one year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. Additionally, violators could receive eight or more points on their license, leading to possible suspension or revocation of driving privileges.

The legislation, passed due to increased incidents of organized street racing disrupting traffic in populated areas, clearly defines violations. Actions such as skidding, squealing tires, swerving, loud noise, grinding gears, backfiring, airborne wheels, and passengers hanging out of windows or on hoods will be penalized if committed near a crowd.

Last year, Maryland reported 139 such incidents.
