Baltimore, MD - Nov. 22, 2023 - At least seven Maryland lawmakers are calling on Attorney General Anthony Brown to remove an embattled member from his hate crimes commission for antisemitic social media posts.
In a statement released Tuesday, Brown’s office announced the “temporary suspension” of Zainab Chaudry from the Maryland Commission on Hate Crimes Response and Prevention.
Attorney General Brown has determined that Ms. Chaudry’s social media posts risk disrupting the work and mission of the Commission, so he is announcing steps that he took today to ensure that the vital work and mission of the Commission can continue without interruption,” the Maryland Attorney General’s press release stated.
In a statement, Chaudry shared her belief this is part of a coordinated campaign to remove her from the commission.
"None of the criticisms that I leveled against Benjamin Netanyahu's far-right, racist and openly genocidal government on my personal social media accounts violated any known commission standards and there is no legal basis for suspending the participation of my civil rights organization, which is mandated by state law," said Chaudry in a statement.
As Maryland’s Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MD), Zainab Chaudry joined more than 20 organizations seated on the state’s hate crimes commission, according to the Attorney General’s office.
Since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war, Chaudry has routinely posted controversial messages supporting Hamas while slamming Israel's response to a deadly Oct. 7 attack by the terror group on a southern Israeli music festival.
The Attorney General’s office claimed they were made aware of several disturbing posts by Chaudry only last week, including an Oct. 17 post paralleling an Israeli rally to the actions of the Nazi regime.
Nine days later, Chaudry claimed Israel was lying about the brutal killing of their nation’s children by Hamas terrorists.
"I will never be able to understand how the world summoned up rate for 40 fake Israeli babies while completely turning a blind eye to 3,000 real Palestinian babies,” Maryland Commission on Hate Crimes Response and Prevention member Zainab Chaudry wrote in an Oct. 26 post on her Facebook.
In another post, Chaudry celebrated Hamas terrorists while calling attendees of the recent “March of Israel” in Washington an assembly of “genocide sympathizer.”
In a joint letter penned by seven state legislators, lawmakers pleaded with the Attorney General not to reinstate Zainab Chaudry to her post, arguing her views pose "a danger to the Jewish community."
According to Del. Ryan Nawrocki, Chaudry's social media comments undermine a gruesome struggle his family came to the U.S. to escape.
"As someone who has family that lived through the atrocities of Nazi Germany, I’m horrified to read these comments by a member of the Maryland State Commission on Hate Crime Response and Prevention,” Del. Ryan Nawrocki said in a statement.
Del. Nic Kipke slammed Chaudry’s social media rhetoric, pointing to Hamas’s own videos showcasing their unprovoked attack on a southern Israel music festival and settlements that pushed the region into a deadly war.
It’s disgusting to deny the grief and horror that the Israeli people suffered on October 7th and that Jewish people all over the world are still feeling,” Del. Nic Kipke said in a written statement.
FOX45 News reached out to Governor Wes Moore’s office for comment. His team declined to comment on any aspect of this story, citing the hate crimes commission does not fall under the governor office’s oversight. Senate President Bill Ferguson and House Speaker Adrienne Jones did not return immediate comment requests.
As for Zainab Chaudry, her suspension has not paused her social media commentary.
"[A]ny pushback we get for standing up for justice and exposing Israel’s crimes is nothing compared to with [P]alestinians are experiencing,” Zainab Chaudry posted Tuesday on Facebook.
FOX45 News did offer an interview opportunity and comment ability to Zainab Chaudry for this article. Requests were not immediately returned.
