Jerusalem, Israel - Nov. 10, 2023  - On behalf of all the 2000 people in the Olive Tree, Grand Court and Leonardo Hotels in Jerusalem, I would like to thank you for your kind donations. Baltimore is a community built on chessed.

I’d like to bring you to date on what is going on here and what we are working on.

Remember that this is a grassroots efforts, organized by local people who saw a disaster on our doorstep as it were, and reached out to make a difference

In the early days, our focus was toiletries as that seemed to be the biggest need.

We bought toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, diaper rash cream, pacifiers and baby bottles.

We set up a gmach clothing store in the basement of the Olive Tree Hotel and purchased bins and racks to make easy to people to browse and see what they need. The store is stocked from donations from the neighborhoods in the vicinity of the hotels. We have just received 6 duffel bags of clothing from Toronto as well.

A couple of us went yesterday to another major gemach for evacuees in the Gerad Behar Community Center to see if we could fill in some of the important items that we didn’t have enough of – like sweatshirts, sweaters, jackets and coats. The evacuees are all from the south in these hotels and even in the best of times (which this is not…..) wouldn’t have warm enough clothing for the much cooler weather here in Jerusalem. However, it’s not worth it to buy these items since they are available in good used condition, they won’t need them when they return home and these are expensive items to buy.

But some items are not appropriate for 2nd hand use. Underwear for men, women and children is now our major focus for purchasing. We just purchased a large quantity of ladies underwear from a local wholesaler.

The other area that we want to spend money on are religious articles. Tzitzis and kipot are often requested and really need to be bought new. I bought tzitzis for a family who requested yesterday. She is living at the hotel with 5 children. Her husband was called up and is fighting in Gaza. She is understandably overwhelmed by the situation. At her request, last week I bought a large quantity of white boys Shabbos shirts in many sizes for her to distribute. When I delivered the tzizis, she told me how good it made everyone feel to see the boys in clean fresh Shabbos shirts. These small things make a huge difference

We want to spend our available funds in the ways that the evacuees will get the most benefit from and we want to get the best value for the tzedakah funds that we are utilizing. For these reasons we are taking our time and working with community representatives in the hotels as well as government social workers assigned to the hotels to ensure we are meeting the actual needs. These identified needs are fluid, and we are making sure that we are able to pivot quickly as needs change.

Not all evacuees are in hotels. Many are in apartments all over the city. We were just notified of a family with several children who just moved into the building across the street where our son lives. The family has several children, including a one-month-old whose bis was the day after Simchas Torah. I cannot imagine what that bris must have been like….. The children are being put into schools here and this is quite stressful for them as they don’t know anyone. They needed school supplies. We bought new backpacks for them. In a typical story, when I went to buy the backpacks, I told the store owner what they were for. He added in pompoms for free to decorate the backpacks. Baby clothes were collected for the new baby and Shabbos food was organized by the neighborhood.

Much effort is being put in providing positive experiences for the evacuees as well. Rabbi Senter’s yeshiva is directly across the street and they come over every Friday night for a lively Oneg Shabbos. Last week was a beautiful hafrashas challah run by a granddaughter of the Babi Sali with beautiful stories and singing. Last week there was an ice cream party for the children and another day there was a carnival in a local park with food, music, craft activities, and moonbounces.. Various donors cover the costs of these activities.

Its not all fun though. Some these people are so traumatized that they will not leave the hotel. The children do not have enough to keep themselves occupied and get into mischief. Many people brought dogs with them and the dogs must sleep in their crowded hotel rooms. There are people here who have showed me the bombed out remains of the homes. And there are people who have lost family and friends, sometimes right before their eyes. All in all though, despite everything, most people show an amazingly upbeat spirit and tremendous faith in Hashem. I am constantly inspired by them.
