Jerusalem, Israel - Oct. 30, 2023  - Just now we had a siren in ירושלים. That sure woke me up from my trying to catch up on my sleep בין הסדרים. Stop sleeping, grab your shirt and some slippers, and head out of your comfort zone. When the siren goes off, we all go quickly to either the stairwell on the third floor or if we have enough time to the bomb shelter on the 1st floor. Making the trek from our top floor, the 6th, while putting on my shirt and not slipping up in my crocks is a feat any day, how much more so when you're getting up in the years (won’t tell you which חשובה number I’m getting close to!) but Baruch HaShem managed to make it safely down the stairs (we are told not to use the elevator during a possible missile attack). So we meet all the neighbors in the building in various modes of activity, including their guests, the newborn babies, lots of חשובה ladies, and a few males who are home at this time. Each one coping with the sound of the siren blaring loudly, signaling a possible threat. Baruch Hashem, nothing of consequence happened in our שכונה, and no loud boom, which we heard.

Well, I made it all the way to the bomb shelter in time, and everyone greeted me while I was in the middle of saying תהילים on the way down and into the shelter. Then I continued to say תהילים בל פה that everyone should be safe and חס ושלום nothing should happen to anyone of our brothers and sisters. Then it hit home a lot deeper how אחינו כל בית ישראל are truly all in the same boat, and we are all dependent upon השם יתברך's protection. Yes, we have Iron Dome and etc., but we all know now that אם השם לא ישמור עיר שוא שקד שומר, together with all of the השם ,השתדלות,is really in charge, and we need to ask, plead, cry for His protection for all of us.

Our ירושלים siren was nothing in comparison to the daily attacks in the south for years and years and now the daily missiles in the center and north of the country, which have caused many deaths, serious injuries, and much trauma. The lesson of the siren is that השם is in charge, and the siren is His shofar calling to us. Return, my people, to His Torah, His mitzvot, His chesed. Act accordingly with your family, friends, and neighbors. Smile, say hello, ask how they are doing. And let’s see how all of us, as יהודים, who need each other and most importantly, our בורא the Almighty, we need Him. Oh, how we need Him.

While I was in our bomb shelter after saying תהילים, I asked an older ספרדית אלמנה whose husband had passed years ago how she is handling the מצב. We spoke, and she smiled, asked how my wife and I were doing as well. A bit of בין אדם לחברו can go a long way, definitely won’t hurt, and probably is what we need to be doing more of these days.

Lastly, if you need a good bomb shelter while in our neighborhood, come to 13 משקלוב in הר נוף. Our bomb shelter houses a great judaica library with wonderful books from גדולים biographies to Torah thoughts, etc. started by our friend Mrs. Chaya Wurfel שתחי in memory of her late husband, Joe Wurfel, הי"ד, a survivor of the terrorist attack in הר נוף who escaped and helped others escape as well.  יהי זכרו ברוך. Only in Israel do we have Jewish libraries in our bomb shelters. Hopefully, you can visit when משיח comes, and the library will be full of more books and more יהודים learning and reading them from cover to cover.
