According to an article on Forbes, called “The Importance of Having a Mission-Driven Company,” the author reveals how mission-driven workers are 54 percent more likely to stay for five years at a company and 30 percent more likely to grow into high performers than those who arrive at work with only their paycheck as the motivator.

Working for a company for the money or the brand name is nice; but when an employee believes in what the company stands for, then that will often determine how successful and happy he is at that company. It is the mission-statement of the company that, when connected to, makes the employee goal-oriented, ambitious, and hard-fighting; the type of qualities that a true boss wants to see.

The work environment and the importance of a company having a mission-statement, can serve as an invaluable life lesson for us, as we try to navigate the sometimes-confusing terrain of everyday life. So many people today suffer from depression. In 2023, 29.0% of Americans report having been diagnosed with depression in their lifetime, while 17.8% reporting currently having depression. According to CNN, as of 2023, more than 1 out of 6 say they are depressed or are receiving treatment.

So many people are living, breathing, and going through the motions. But they are lacking a mission-statement. The goals are invisible and the ambition is ignored. Today, the norm is that people cancel each other, politicians quarrel with each other, and countries boast their capabilities over one another. There is a lot of external fighting.

The secret to success, however, lies, not in how well we fight our external battles with each other, but rather, true success lies in how well we fight our internal battle against our Yetzer Hara. The Torah tells us: כי תצא למלחמה על איביך – When you go out to battle against your enemy. “Your enemy” is understood to mean the Yetzer Harah.

If we place the comma after the words כי תצא למלחמה, before על איביך, perhaps we can discover an important message. כי תצא למלחמה – When you go out to war. When you go out to fight. The mere fact that you are geared up and going out to fight, already puts you in an advantageous position over your Yetzer Hara. Hence, when you go out to fight – when you choose not to fight silly external battles but rather you choose to fight internally – you are already על, on top of your enemy.

We all need to have a mission-statement. Life is not about who you are fighting with; life is about what you are fighting for! So, let us connect to our mission-statement of being holy, righteous, and growing people, and fight for that. Go out to battle. Be on a growing path. Work on yourself. Learn a little every day. Pray to Hashem. When we do that, we are על איביך, we are already have  an advantage over our Yetzer Hara.

Have a holy Shabbos!
