New York, NY - Aug. 23, 2023 - In a groundbreaking partnership, the U.S. Navy has joined forces with the Orthodox Union (OU) and the Aleph Institute to improve the availability and accessibility of kosher food aboard its vessels. While kosher food options have been present on navy ships in the past, the complexities of storage limitations and resupplying have often posed challenges to sailors wishing to maintain a kosher diet.

The push for improved kosher provisions began in earnest in 2019 when the Aleph Institute embarked on an assessment. Recognizing the need for further expertise, they recently brought the OU on board to contribute to the endeavor.

Rabbi Eli Eleff, OU Kosher's managing director of community relations, and Rabbi Daniel Sharratt, OU Kosher's rabbinic coordinator, undertook thorough examinations of Navy ships. Furthermore, they consulted with kosher-observing sailors to gather essential feedback.

The culmination of their efforts is a comprehensive report detailing guidelines for procuring kosher supplies. This report will be an invaluable resource for Naval supply officers, chaplains, and Jewish sailors. It meticulously outlines the procedures for obtaining kosher meals across various classes of navy vessels.

This collaboration signifies a meaningful commitment to ensuring that the religious dietary needs of Jewish sailors are met with understanding and practical solutions.
