Agudath Israel of America commends Governor Gavin Newsom and the California State Legislature for providing $20 million for the California Nonprofit Security Grant Program in the budget bill signed last week. While Agudah joined the Legislative Jewish Caucus and other advocates in requesting $80 million for the program, the initial budget legislation proposed in January didn’t include any funding for the grants due to the state’s $30 billion budget deficit. Thankfully, the final budget deal included $20 million, which will allow at least the most at-risk institutions to receive funding. Agudath Israel is working with Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel on expanding the allowable uses of the grants and hopes to see further expansion this session that will allow for monitoring and response systems to protect vulnerable communities.

“During a time of rising antisemitism in California and across the country, Agudath Israel is grateful that Governor Newsom and the California Legislature made protecting our at-risk schools, houses of worship, and other nonprofits a priority,” said Rabbi A.D. Motzen, national director of government affairs for Agudath Israel of America. “We are hopeful that next year’s budget forecasts will allow the state to fully fund this vital program.”

“Thank you to Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel and the members of the Legislative Jewish Caucus for once again leading the legislative effort, and to all those who contacted their elected officials in support of this critical funding,” said Rabbi Yaakov Subar, Agudath Israel of America’s California director. “With antisemitic shootings at several Orthodox congregations in recent years, the need for these grants is very real for our community.”
