According to Popular Science, hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports. The average speed of a fastball is 90mph. The ball is in the hitting zone for less than 10 milliseconds. Even more, you're trying to hit a round ball with a rounded piece of wood, so the margin of error for making solid contact is roughly half the width of your phone's SIM card.

In order to provide the batter with increased safety and a hitting advantage, every stadium in the MLB has something called a Batter's Eye. The Batter's Eye, or Batter's Eye Screen is a solid dark-colored area beyond the center field wall of a baseball stadium, that serves as a visual backdrop directly in the line of sight of a baseball batter while facing the pitcher. The dark backdrop allows the batter to see the pitched ball against a sharply contrasted and uncluttered background.

I was thinking about the Batter's Eye, and couldn't help but realize the powerful message that it conveys to us. You see, we live in a world that is filled with a tremendous amount of sheker, fallacies and falsehoods. The world is drifting away in a frenzied state of chaotic confusion and disillusionment. False ideals, false values, and false ethical systems - or lack thereof - are plaguing the world that once knew principles of integrity and morality. What was once completely not allowed and immoral is now celebrated and respected.

The gap between sheker and emes, between falsehood and truth, has been merged, leading to a current state of spiritual misunderstanding and an unprecedented state of moral confusion. When falsehood and truth cannot be clearly identified and separated from each other, it creates a recipe for striking out, missing the ball, and not being able to take advantage of the opportunity of being a player in the game of life. The Batter's Eye is so crucial because the very backdrop that is its essence provides a stark contrast for the batter to be able to see the ball clearly and most effectively. The Batter's Eye, situated in center field, ensures that the ball does not get lost in sight, due to its sharply contrasted and uncluttered background.

G-d gave us - the Jewish people - an eternal gift, called the Torah, which is The Word of G-d, a Book that represents and is completely emes, truth. The words “"זאת חקת התורה (19:2) on some level are perhaps teaching us that the Torah is in the realm of זאת, THIS. In a world of sheker, the Torah is something we can connect to; we can point to it and use it as a guide to direct us on a path of emes.

In a world that threatens not to see the difference between falsehood and truth, let us realize that the Torah is the Batter's Eye of the Jewish people. At the center of our lives, it allows us, the batters, to focus on our life's mission and to properly see the pitches of life that are thrown our way. The clear, unadulterated, and uncluttered Batter's Eye backdrop, that is, our Torah, allows us to keep our eye on the ball and have the proper vision and wherewithal of recognizing what is truth and what is not.

Having a center point of clarity for truth in our lives will enable us to live with great meaning, purpose, and joy.

Have a holy Shabbos!
