Baltimore, MD - June 14, 2023 - Last week, there were several sightings of a large bear in Howard County and nearby areas, prompting concern from residents. Bears were sighted in backyards, near schools leading to brief lockdowns, and even one incident in a Northeast DC neighborhood where a bear had to be tranquilized. Residents were surprised at these unusual sightings in places where bears are not typically found.
According to Jonathan Trudeau, a Bear Biologist from Maryland's Department of Natural Resources (DNR), this time of year sees young bears dispersing to find new territories to inhabit. This migration often leads to bears venturing into populated areas. Trudeau also notes an increasing trend over the past few decades of bears moving more frequently towards the east, attributing it to increasing bear density.
For safety, residents are advised to remain calm and back away slowly if they encounter a bear, making themselves appear larger by raising their arms. In addition, residents can deter bears by keeping trash indoors until pickup and removing other food sources. More information and resources on bear sightings can be found on the DNR's website.
