Baltimore, MD - Apr. 5, 2023 - Erev Pesach 5783:

Dear Baltimore Community,

As we approach Pesach and the end of the 2023 legislative session, I want to take a moment to reflect on some of the work I’ve been doing in Annapolis on behalf of our community.

After lengthy negotiations and hours upon hours of work, I’m so grateful to report that this session I’ll be bringing home more money to our community in the Maryland State Budget than ever before. I’ve spent a significant amount of time negotiating with the Governor, Speaker of the House, Senate President and all my colleagues to press the importance of funding for our community, and I am so appreciative for all their support.

In addition to the 9 million dollars in the budget for BOOST funding for private schools, the 6.5 million for textbooks and technology for private schools, the 3.5 million for private school enhancements, and the 8 million dollars in grants to combat hate crimes, this year’s budget includes a new 6 million dollars for private schools for safety, medical costs and various educational uses.

I have also been successful in securing funding for various organizations and schools in our communities, which will be detailed in my post-session newsletter in the coming weeks. And, very importantly, I’ve been successful for the first time in Maryland history in creating a path for private school bussing funded by the State, and I look forward to formulating this policy in the interim with the collaboration of many experts throughout the State.

I write this brief update now highlighting just some of the many accomplishments from this legislative session as we approach Pesach, a time to celebrate our exodus from Mitzraim, because this session has reminded me how far we’ve come and how much more work there is to do in the future. I’ve endured blatant antisemitism, some of which many of you have seen in shared videos along with much more that has not made it into shared videos. This blatant hatred has given me even more drive to advocate for us and reminds me daily of the importance of the work I’m doing in Annapolis.

Thank you to each and every one of you for your unwavering support, and may we all have an amazing Yom Tov with our families and friends.

Chag Sameach!
