MONSEY (VINnews/Sandy Eller) — Two New Square residents died this afternoon when the vehicle that they were riding in collided with a tree. The men were part of a group of two families on their way to a New York City wedding.

46 year old Aharon Shmuel Deutsch 46 and his 24 year old son in law Shlomo Birnhack were both pronounced dead at Nyack Hospital. Deutsch’s wife is critical and other family members sustained serious injuries.

The incident took place shortly after 4 PM on New Hempstead Road just west of exit 11 on the Palisades Interstate Parkway when the silver 15 passenger van left the roadway for unknown reasons.

Multiple emergency crews including the Ramapo Police Department, Chaverim of Rockland, Hatzolah, New City EMS and the Hillcrest Fire Department responded to the scene near the Friedwald Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, just a short distance from New Square.

Yossi Margaretten of Chaverim of Rockland County told VIN News that 11 people were in the van at the time of the crash. All of the passengers had to be extricated by first responders, with victims airlifted to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern and Nyack Hospital in Nyack. Three victims were reported to be in very serious condition.

The cause of the accident in the 35 mile per hour zone was not immediately known. The entire area is shut down as first responders and police continue processing the scene.
