LOS ANGELES (VINnews) — A Los Angeles city council member cancelled her 24/7 security detail after being accused of being a hypocrite.
Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez, along with council members Herb Wesson, Curren Price and Monica Rodriguez, had proposed a $150 million cut from LAPD’s budget amid the country-wide protests after the death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer.
Only, Martinez was still maintaining a 24/7 securitu detail from the very police department she wished to defund, prompting outrage due to her glaring hypocrisy.
“It’s kind of ironic,” Detective Jamie McBride, director of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, the LAPD’s union, told the network. “Here she is demanding $150 million be reallocated from the police budget, but yet she has security at her house by the Los Angeles Police Department.”
The LAPD has confirmed that beginning May 4, 24/7 security was arranged for Martinez’s home. The security detail almost always consisted of 2 officers. By May 6, the detail decreased to only the hours of 7 AM through 9 PM, with a patrol checking in a few times overnight.
McBride charges that Martinez should have self-funded a private security detail instead of using taxpayer dollars, especially since the city is suffering due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s disgusting,” the McBride told Spectrum News 1. “For two officers in front of a residence since April, you’re probably over $100,000 of the people’s money.”
The security detail was cancelled by Thursday night.
According to Martinez’s spokesman Rick Coca, the security detail was put in place by recommendation of the LAPD.
“After death threats to the Council President and her daughter and safety concerns that began over a month ago, LAPD recommended that placing a detail at her home was the best course of action to ensure the safety of the Council President and her family,” said Coca. “Martinez nixed the detail because the security it was intended to provide was now compromised,” he continued.
