Baltimore, MD - Dec. 23, 2018 - We don't know why people come down to this world. But, on Shabbat, the world lost someone and I am going to have the audacity to say I know why she was in the world:  because her smile made me/people happy.

She couldn't walk, talk, eat normally or live a normal life. She had a trach, feeding tube and spent most of her time in bed and if not in bed, in her wheelchair. She couldn't do anything herself and she had no control over anything besides her simple incredible smile.

Chayala lived in my sister's group home. They lived together for many years, and in a way all the girls living there are like siblings. Every single time I visited Talya at her home, or picked her up or dropped her off, for the last 15 years, I saw Chayala and I was selfish and always made sure to get a smile. I never went up to her to make her feel good. I admit perhaps with shame, but I approached her because I'm selfish and I needed her smile… for me. I say hello to the other girls but no one else in the home did.  I made an effort each time to find her, to go over to her in order to receive from her the only thing she could give with choice: a huge delicious contagious beautiful smile. She would smile at me, or anyone, and everything became better. I would often think.. 'she's so trapped... how is she smiling? but if Chayala can, so can I.'

The only comfort I find today in knowing she passed away yesterday is 1. that she is no longer suffering and is in a better place where her soul isn't trapped in a body and 2. that she did, no doubt, accomplish her mission in this world... spreading light, joy and warmth to anyone that had the privilege to be in her presence.

Chayala's, a'h, smile will live on forever in her pictures and in our hearts.

Sending love and strength to her family...   for friends who went to Bruriah, this is R Francis's niece.
