Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ranked higher than Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Forbes magazine’s annual list of the world’s most powerful people.
Iran’s chief imam placed 18th, while the premier of the Jewish state only made the 21st slot.
This is not the first time Khamenei has ranked higher than Netanyahu on the magazine’s powerful people list. In 2014, Khamenei ranked No. 20 and Netanyahu No. 26; and in 2013, Khamenei ranked No. 23 and Netanyahu No. 26.
This year’s list consists of 73 slots but includes 74 people, since brothers Charles and David Koch, of Koch Industries, share 29th place. To calculate the rankings, Forbes considers hundreds of candidates from around the world and from different fields. The magazine said a panel of its editors ranks the candidates by measuring four “power” dimensions: the candidate’s power over a lot of people; his or her control over financial resources; whether the candidate is powerful in multiple arenas; and if the candidate actively uses his or her power. The individual rankings are averaged into a composite score and the top 74 make the final cut, according to Forbes.
Russian President Vladimir Putin took the top spot as the world’s most powerful person for the third year in a row. Second place was given to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who jumped from No. 5 last year.
