Jerusalem - An Israeli non-profit agency is putting together a class action suit against Facebook, charging that the social media giant is serving as a platform to incite and encourage violence.
Shurat HaDin, a Tel Aviv based agency founded in 2003, focuses on representing terror victims and ensuring Jewish rights worldwide. Also known as the Israel Law Center, Shurat HaDin has won several high profile cases including a $218.5 million judgment against the Palestinian Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority this past February and a $323 million judgment against Syria for the murder of 16 year old American Daniel Wultz,, killed in a 2006 suicide bomb attack in a Tel Aviv restaurant.
Charging that Facebook helps promote terror by allowing users to post hate filled messages, Shurat HaDin is encouraging Israelis to join the upcoming lawsuit by signing up on a newly created Facebook page. Shurat HaDin cited several examples of incitement, including posts by Muhannad Halabi announcing the beginning of the third intifada just one day before he fatally stabbed Aharon Benita and Rabbi Nehmia Lavi in the Old City earlier this month.
A Shurat HaDin press release said that it holds Facebook accountable for violent content posted by users. The legal group declared its intention to get an injunction forcing Facebook to remove pages that encourage violence and a court order directing the social media site to monitor and block similar posts.
“Facebook has the means to research and monitor every word that appears on its website. It cannot be that entire pages on Facebook are devoted to incitement to murder Jews and that terrorists are permitted to publish posts that become popular among their friends and encourage them to kill. It is absurd that Facebook is being transformed into a tool for supporting incitement and attacks against Jews, and we intend to put an end to it.”
Shurat HaDin invited the public to submit any examples of incitement to be incorporated in the legal case which will be filed in the United States and handled by a New York law firm.
Shurat HaDin’s newly created Facebook page titled “Disconnect Terror,” informs visitors that “The terrorists do not come by themselves. They write posts. They encourage their friends to kill Jews. Facebook has turned into an anti-Semitic greenhouse that promotes murder. Join us in our case against Facebook so that we can shut down the pages that incite violence and stop the terror.”
Shurat HaDin’s director, Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, called the lawsuit a important opportunity for every Israeli to fight back against terrorism.
“Facebook has become a haven for terrorists: they publish their actions on their Facebook pages, garner support, receive instructions and direction to murder Jews and all this under the sponsorship of a commercial company that has the power to stop it easily,” said Darshan-Leitner. “At the time that Facebook suffices with words and tells us that it intends ‘to remove inciting pages,’ the website is filling up more and more each moment with severe incitement and it is our task to do everything to stop this.”
