The Rabbis tell us that, “The world is built on chesed.”
HaShem provides the ultimate chesed by continually sustaining the world He created, thereby giving us the opportunity to use our free will to come close to Him. HaShem could have made humankind perfect from the beginning - lacking any yetzer hara (inclination toward destructive choices) - and therefore we would have had the ultimate relationship from the very start.
But the Almighty didn’t do that. Rather, He compels us to work for our connection with Him through a lifetime of choices and challenges. Therefore, we see that earning pleasure by exercising our free will is really the greatest way to develop and maximize our potential and warrant the highest rewards.
Parshas Noach gives us a wonderful insight into this idea - and how the world was literally built on chesed. Perhaps Noach’s most tiring task on the Teiva (Ark) was having to feed and clean up after all of the animals - a truly thankless job. The gemara (Sanhedrin 108) tells us that Noach had to supply special food for each species, and on their own unique schedules.
Once the Ark came to rest, and the earth was ready to be repopulated, Noach planted seeds he had saved, and used the refuse from the ark to fertilize the dry land that was scorched from the boiling, viscous waters of the flood. Therefore, the world was literally built by the chesed Noach performed during those many months on the Teiva.
As it says in Tehillim (128:2), “When you eat the labor of your hands, you are praiseworthy, and it is good for you.” The Ohr HaChaim applies this verse to Noach as a reward for his actions on the Ark.
Our goal is to have a healthy relationship with eating, consuming the right foods that give us energy, health and vitality to learn Torah and do mitzvos. It’s a chesed we do for ourselves when we treat our bodies properly by making sure we get sufficient nutrition. If Noach provided that for the animals, certainly we should have it for ourselves.
And sometimes that means it takes a bit of an effort to get what our bodies need instead of just grabbing for what we feel like at the moment. But just like Noach, we will surely reap the rewards as it says in the Psalm.
