Paysandu, Uruguay - Media outlets in Uruguay are reporting late Tuesday that a Jewish man from the town of Paysandu was stabbed to death.

The victim was identified as 54 year old David Fremd, a merchant from Aventura Paysandú. It happened in the afternoon at the corner of Avenida Spain and the sanducera Guayabos capital.

Fremd suffered serious wounds and later died in the hospital. One of the three sons of Fremd saw the situation and came to his aid, but was also attacked, suffering minor injuries.

Police meanwhile questioned and arrested a 35 year old suspect who has a lengthy criminal history.

The president of the Jewish Central Committee, Sergio Gorzy, expressed dismay at the situation of a member of the community.

So far, investigators want to ascertain if anti-Semitism was the motive for the killing.
