Baltimore, MD - June 22, 2026 - Yesterday, June 21, 2026, the Jewish War Veterans (JWV) of the USA Department of the Mid-Atlantic Area and Israel officially convened for their annual Department Convention at the historic Pikesville Armory. The day was marked by a profound sense of camaraderie, historical tribute, and a forward-looking commitment.
Installation of 2026/2027 Department Officers
A core highlight of the convention was the formal installation of the Department leadership team for the upcoming term, gracefully conducted by National Vice Commander Selina Kanowitz. The newly installed leadership roster:
Department Commander: Scott Schlesinger
Senior Vice Commander: Charley Jay
National Executive Committee: Andrew Swedlow
Judge Advocate: Harvey Kaplan
Chaplain: Rabbi Chesky Tenenbaum
Adjutant: Dan Berkovitz
Quartermaster: Charles Sandler
Keynote Address: A Legacy of Blood and Bravery
Rear Admiral Paul Becker, USN (ret.), delivered a stirring keynote presentation focused on the deep, unbreakable thread of Jewish service in the United States military from the country's founding to modern times. Speaking to a room he noted was filled with "father figures," RADM Becker underscored the theme of "T3" Leadership (Teamwork, Tone, Tenacity) and provided powerful historical context to completely dismantle age-old antisemitic tropes of disloyalty:
The Revolutionary War: When fewer than 2,500 Jews lived in the colonies, they disproportionately stepped up. Figures like Haym Salomon financed the Continental Army without repayment, Francis Salvador became the first Jewish soldier killed in action, and Mordecai Sheftall served as a high-ranking officer.
The Civil War: Roughly 10,000 Jews served, and President Lincoln appointed several Jewish Generals. Crucially, the JWV was established in 1896 specifically to counter antisemitic claims that Jews did not serve.
World War II: Over 550,000 Jewish Americans served - representing roughly 5% of U.S. forces at a time when Jews made up only 2.5% of the general population. Around 11,000 made the ultimate sacrifice.
Medal of Honor: At least 17 Jewish Americans have been awarded the nation's highest military decoration for outstanding courage under fire.
As RADM Becker powerfully stated, this incredible record of patriotism is not peripheral; it is fundamentally woven into the fabric of America's story, proving that Jewish veterans have always fully embraced the "We the People" ideal.
This deep legacy of leadership is exemplified by late giants of the organization like past National Commander Judge Paul Ribner, a veteran whose exceptional lifetime of military justice, judicial expertise, and national leadership is commemorated.
Moving Moments of Remembrance and Faith
Following the keynote address, a solemn memorial service was held to honor the blessed memories of departed comrades who passed away over the last year, including Donald Levin (Post 167), John Walker (Post 180), Marc Skurow (Post 380), Simon J. Krumbein, and Louis Seidel (Post 888).
In a beautiful, spontaneous demonstration of shared faith following the presentation, Department Chaplain Rabbi Chesky Tenenbaum helped RADM Paul Becker don tefillin, a moment that resonated deeply with everyone in attendance.
Standing in Solidarity with Israel: The October Mission
The convention also featured a vital advocacy plug from the Department, reminding attendees that thousands of proud U.S. military veterans now call Israel home. Leadership made it clear that the absolute best way to show tangible support for Israel right now is through direct tourism.
To turn that sentiment into action, the Department heavily highlighted its upcoming Mission to Israel, scheduled for October 19th–28th, 2026. Attendees were urged to review the full details and registration guidelines found on the website
Special Thanks
The Department of the Mid-Atlantic Area & Israel extends its warmest gratitude to the entire Pikesville Armory team for opening their exceptional facilities to the JWV. A massive, heartfelt thank you goes to JWV Maryland Free State Post 167’s newest member, David Ginsburg, for his incredible hospitality, hard work, and dedication to the vital revitalization efforts taking place at the Armory.
