Despite the slight chill in the air, the atmosphere was warm and festive on the hill by the Sykesville Town Hall on Tuesday night, as close to 100 people — perhaps more — lined up to savor fresh fried doughnuts and latkes, dance, take photos, and wish one another Happy Hanukkah.
It was the third annual lighting of the giant public menorah, on the third night of Hanukkah, and three candles would be lit on the large metal menorah, in addition to the Shamash light in the middle.
"It's the third night of Hanukkah, so we will be lighting up three lights," said Rabbi Sholly Cohen, of the Chabad Jewish Center of Carroll County, which organizes the menorah lighting. "This idea of lighting up every day an extra candle, is the idea of Hanukkah, that we get better and better every day," Cohen said. "The idea of lighting the menorah is to show the constant strive, the constant elevation, up the ladder, another light."
The menorah-lighting event itself has had steady growth, according to Tennile Rubin, who had come with her husband Mike and son Dylan.
