Baltimore, MD - Dec. 22, 2016 - It has been many years since Baltimore’s City Council has seen an Orthodox Jewish City Councilman among its members. Thus, it has been quite a while since a Mezuzah has been seen in Baltimore’s City Hall.

Last Thursday, as part of a Lunch ‘N Learn program, Rabbi Shmuel Silber gave his shiur and a lesson from Chanukah in the office of Councilman Yitzy Schleifer’s office, after which the Rabbi put up the Mezuzah (without a bracha).

As usual, his message was enlightening:

Our sages illuminate for us the deeper meaning inherent in Jewish law. In a few days, we will light the Chanukah menorah.  Halacha dictates that we hold as Bais Hillel, lighting one candle on the first night, and adding another light with each successive night.  What we can learn from this is that in life, the secret to rededicating our homes, chanukas habayis, and ourselves to spiritual growth begins with one small light.

And this is true in public service as well. As City Councilman, Yitzy Schleifer has the incredible opportunity to affect change and make improvements – one step at a time. From these first steps, we can all find the courage and strength to lift ourselves, and our community, toward perpetual growth, the ultimate goal of every Jew.
