Baltimore, MD - Dec. 22, 2016 - December 21, 2016 marked the 3rd Annual Menorah Lighting at Baltimore City Hall. While this year’s lighting was symbolic in nature as the holiday of Chanukah had not yet started, the glow of the holiday surely filled the historic seat of our City’s government. In addition to the elected officials that addressed the attended guests, that included, Mayor Catherine E. Pugh, City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young and City Councilman Isaac ”Yitzy” Schleifer, the true stars of the event were the members of the Cheder Chabad Boys Choir.
As part of their day at City Hall, the boys were treated to a private audience with Councilman Schleifer. The boys met with the Councilman in his office and were given “gelt” and other Chanukah treats. Councilman Schleifer commented, “Just as the light of the menorah symbolizes the internal light that each of us has the potential to ignite, the radiance of the Cheder students could be seen on their faces. It was so important for the children of our community to see a mezuzah on the office of a City Councilman and learn that with hard work and the sincere desire to help their fellow neighbors anything is possible”.
Other dignitaries that joined in the festivities were, Attorney Stanley Fine, Comptroller Joan Pratt, Council Members, Leon Pinkett, Mary Pat Clark, Kris Burnett, Zeke Cohen and Robert Stokes. Chief Melissa Hyatt, Jewish Community Liaison Officer, Bill Currie and Detective Jeremy Silbert proudly attended as representatives of the Baltimore City Police Department. Harav Elchonon Lisbon of Chabad of Park Heights and Rabbi Cheskey Tennebaum, Director, Jewish Uniformed Services of Maryland, gave brief remarks and facilitated the symbolic menorah lighting.
The event closed with the beautiful sounds of the Cheder Chabad Boys Choir filing the corridors of City Hall. It is the hope of all, that that lights of Chanukah, radiate throughout the City and rekindle kindness and unity for all its citizens.
