Multiple swastikas were found painted inside a building in the heart of the Williamsburg Jewish community late last week. Police are already investigating a series of bias incidents throughout the city.

Police say that on Friday residents from the Independence Towers projects at 85 Taylor Street discovered swastikas in the stair wall from the 14th to the 20th floor. On Thursday, multiple swastikas were found at the projects on Willson Avenue in Bushwick, investigators are looking into the possibility that the incidents are connected, police sources said.

Hate crimes have spiked by 31 percent, jumping from 250 incidents at this point last year to 328 as of Sunday, Police Commissioner James O’Neill said Sunday. Most of the incidents have targeted the Muslim and Jewish communities, O’Neill added.

At a unrelated press conference on Friday afternoon NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said there have been 13 swastika incidents in NYC since election day. Only one of the swastikas had a reference to Donald Trump and Boyce said he does not believe they are directly connected to the president-elect.

“We are looking at it as a spike,” Boyce added. “We are concerned about it, but my investigators make arrests in these things all the time. The best thing that we can do is go out and make arrests.”
