Baltimore, MD - Nov. 18, 2016 - This Shabbos (Parshas Vayeira), the Baltimore Jewish community is afforded the rare opportunity to meet and hear Divrei Torah from the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rav David Baruch Lau.
Rav Lau is the youngest person ever selected for the Chief Rabbi position. Previously, Rav Lau served as the Chief Rabbi of Modi'in, and as Chief Rabbi of Shoham. He is also a reserve major in the Intelligence Corps of the Israel Defense Forces.
Rav Lau was the first rabbi in Israel to provide halachic responsa over the internet, and has appeared regularly on Israeli television and radio. He has published articles in various halachik journals; edited a book of the responsa of his father, former Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau; and in 2008, published a book (“Maskil LeDavid”) on genealogy, conversion, military law, and other contemporary halachik issues.
A major focus of Rav Lau’s tenure as Chief Rabbi has been building connections between Diaspora Jewry and the State of Israel. According to Rav Lau, “Judaism belongs to all Jews in every sector all around the world, whether they live in Manhattan, Manchester or Modi’in, I want more Jews to learn about their Judaism and feel a part of the Jewish people. We need to focus more on what we have in common and create unity in the Jewish world.”
Rav Lau will be speaking Friday night, November 18, at Shomrei Emunah at 8:00 pm. On Shabbos day, November 19, he will be at Suburban Orthodox Congregation, presenting the morning drasha at 11:20 am, and speaking again at Shalosh Seudos at 4:20 pm. The weekend with Rav Lau will culminate in a community wide event on Motzai Shabbos at Bnai Jacob Shaarei Zion at 8:00 pm, at which Rav Lau will speak on “The State of the Jewish People.”
All events are free and open to the community.
