Jerusalem, Israel Nov. 8, 2016 - The Jewish Agency for Israel and the Ministry of Aliyah and Immigrant Absorption marked Aliyah Day for the first time with a festive ceremony on Tuesday, November 8, at the Jerusalem International Convention Center.

Aliyah Day, a new holiday celebrating immigration to Israel and the contributions of immigrants to Israeli society, began as a grass roots initiative started by Jay M. Shultz and Jonathan Javor. The Knesset in June of this year established the official holiday.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Minister of Defense Avigdor Lieberman, Minister of Aliyah and Immigrant Absorption Sofa Landver, and Chairman of the Executive of The Jewish Agency for Israel Natan Sharansky attended the event featuring artistic performances celebrating immigration to Israel from around the world.

Welcomes were made in Russian, Amharic, and French.

Chairman of the Executive of The Jewish Agency for Israel Natan Sharansky said, “We at The Jewish Agency celebrate Aliyah Day not only today, but each and every day. Our employees and emissaries posted across the world mark this holiday throughout the year as they organize Aliyah fairs, hold informational seminars, and prepare immigrants for their journey home. Jewish Agency emissaries drive Aliyah by both strengthening Jewish identity and deepening ties between Diaspora Jews and the State of Israel every single day. "
