Jerusalem, Israel - Oct. 31, 2016 - The Jewish Agency Board of Governors is holding its fall meetings in Jerusalem, Israel, based at the David Citadel Hotel, from Sunday to Tuesday. The Opening Plenary in the hotel ballroom was moderated by Charles Ratner. Ratner reminisced about his first time meeting Shimon Peres at his family's home, decades ago in Cleveland. The plenary was asked to stand for a moment of silence in memory of former President Peres before beginning the program.

Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky opened his remarks recounting, "Shimon Peres was the first Israeli who greeted me" when arriving in Israel from imprisonment in the former Soviet Union.  

Beginning with successes in his overview of major challenges. Sharansky, reported the Jewish Agency has placed more shilichim than ever. In fighting BDS, the Israel Fellows on college campuses are increasingly important. Pre-military academy for Druze and Jews, Project 10 Durban, and a Bedouin school for future leaders were other Jewish Agency projects singled out as important with goals of tikun olam.

Israeli Justice Minister, MK Ayelet Shaked, arrived to speak to the assembled international delegates. Addressing a list of important figures by name at the start of her speech, Shaked stopped briefly, and commented, "Misters, too many misters. What about women here?' In her remarks Shaked mentioned "the Temple Mount and Western Wall are the life-blood of the Jewish people." Shaked believes Israel will be, "more Jewish, more democratic, more democratic, more Jewish." Two Ethiopian women were recently appointed judges. As Shaked concluded, she said, "hopes are for equal rights in every sector."

Allocations, partnerships, government relations, task force on Campus Israel engagement, strategy and planning are topics of discussions. A special celebration of 10 years of Youth Futures was held Sunday night. A meeting of the Jewish Agency Executive with President Reuven Rivlin was held Monday morning. 

After Tuesday morning meetings, a special plenary hosted by Speaker of the Knesset, MK Yuli Edelstein with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition leader Isaac Herzog is scheduled at the Knesset. Closing plenary discussion and approval of 2017 budget are to be held Tuesday afternoon.
