Jerusalem, Israel - Oct. 7, 2016 - In the Nachlaot neighborhood shul of his grandfather, the legendary Reb Aryeh Levine z'l of Yerushalayim, Rav Benjy Levine, recounted inspirational stories of his grandfather's chesed, including visiting lepers and prisoners decades ago in Yerushalayim.
"The days leading up to Yom Kippur are like WAZE. A time when you can recalculate to get to your desired destination," Rav Benjy told his attentive audience.
Two special stories of Reb Aryeh's wisdom and caring are in a new video recording:
HaRav Avraham HaCohen Baharan z"l was born in the Sha'arei Hesed neighborhood of Yerushalayim in 1935. He attended the Talmud Torah Eitz Chaim of Rav Aryeh Levine z'l and received smicha from Rav Yitzhak Halevi Herzog z"l. At age 20, Baharan learned in the United States at the Lakewood Yeshiva, and afterwards in Yeshivas Chaim Berlin in Brooklyn, where he became a close talmid of Rav Hutner z"l.
In 1962, he married Miriam Samson, the daughter of Rabbi Joseph and Sarah Samson, and the niece of Rabbi Hyman L. Samson of Baltimore, who was the dean of the Talmudical Academy of Baltimore/Yeshivas Chofetz Chaim (TA) for 50 years.
In the mid-to-late 1960s, Rav Baharan taught at the Hebrew Academy of Greater Washington and the Midrasha before returning to Israel. Until his death in 1995,.Baharan headed religious girls' high schools, most notably the school that he founded in 1980, which is still known as Ulpanat HaRav Baharan.
Generations of families have benefited from the wisdom of Reb Aryeh as transmitted through his able talmid Rav Avraham Baharan z"l. His kind and caring approach to his students continue to be an inspiration and aspiration for every one who had the privilege of knowing him.
