MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Disturbing graffiti was found at a park in Milford over the holiday weekend. It’s not known if it was teens creating mischief, or something more sinister, but people who spoke to News 8 said it needs to be dealt with quickly.

It was an otherwise beautiful Labor Day in the park for Barbara Montambault and her dog Kaylee, until they noticed the hurtful graffiti scattered across Milford’s Eisenhower Park.

“What’s wrong with people?” asked Montambault, who lives in Milford. “To have to take their time to do something so silly as that.”

Several swastikas were scrawled prominently in the large park. At least five different ones were visible.

“It’s a symbol of hate,” said Larry Kaminsky, who lives in Milford and frequents the park with his dog. “Anyone with any conscious knows it’s a sign of hate.”

From the side of a building, to the door of a portable toilet, to right smack in the middle of a pedestrian bridge, the symbol was noticeable to all.

“There’s a big ‘keep Milford Clean’ next to on of the swastikas, which I think is ironic,” said Liz McMann, referring to a trash can with the slogan written on it.

“I know it’s a holiday weekend, but something like this, it’s a very bad impression on the town and hurtful to a lot of people,” Kaminsky said.

It’s not certain how long the swastikas have been there. The leader of a local Jewish synagogue said he was alerted to the graffiti nearly a week ago.

“First of all let me say that I have confidence in the city officials that they’re going to deal with this in the proper manner,” said Rabbi Schneur Wilhelm, leader of the Hebrew Congregation of Woodmont and co-director of Chabad Jewish Center of Milford. “The person responsible for this is obviously trying to spread hate.”

Rabbi Wilhelm said the symbol brings back some very tragic memories for Jewish people. However he is confident they will overcome the hate.

“We’re not going to give into that,” Rabbi Wilhelm said. “We’re going to keep moving forward, trying to make this world a better place, a brighter place.”

News 8 reached out to City of Milford officials but have not yet heard back. City offices were closed for Labor Day.
