Brooklyn, NY - An 11 year old is facing hate crime charges as the NYPD continues to investigate the torching of a school bus yesterday in Crown Heights.

The incident took place at the corner of Brooklyn and Lefferts Avenues in front of the Beth Rivkah elementary school in Crown Heights after a school bus driver left the door to his vehicle open.

Surveillance video obtained by CrownHeights.info shows a group of approximately five juveniles boarding the bus holding empty cardboard boxes.

Flames can be seen erupting less than a minute later, first in the center of the bus and then at the front of the bus, with all of the youths involved running off the bus as the fire began to take hold.  Two of the juveniles involved can be seen on the surveillance footage returning to the school bus and watching the flames burn before fleeing the scene.

Police said that they received a 911 call about the bus fire at 6:04 PM and fire crews responding to the scene found the bus engulfed in flames, with smoke pouring out of the school bus’s windows.

An 11 year old boy was arrested in connection with the incident and charged with arson as a hate crime and criminal mischief as a hate crime.  Police said that they could give no further comment on the ongoing investigation.
