Jerusalem, Israel - May 29, 2025 - The Israel Democracy Institute (IDI) held its annual Eli Hurvitz Conference on Economy and Society on May 27–28 at the Orient Hotel in Jerusalem, Israel. The high-level event was chaired by Dr. Karnit Flug, the William Davidson Senior Fellow for Economic Policy at IDI and former Governor of the Bank of Israel.

This year’s conference centered on Israel’s macroeconomic policy priorities in light of the ongoing war, examining the challenges and necessary reforms facing the country.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of a new IDI study examining the economic implications of ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) integration. Researcher Gabi Gordon revealed that the low workforce participation among Haredi men and lower tax contributions by those employed will cost the Israeli economy approximately $2.6 billion in lost income tax revenue. On an individual level, the average Israeli taxpayer is expected to shoulder an additional $1,000 in taxes this year due to these gaps.

Prominent speakers at the conference included Governor of the Bank of Israel Prof. Amir Yaron, Minister in the Ministry of Finance Zeev Elkin, Minister of Labor Yoav Ben-Tzur, Member of Knesset Mansour Abbas, former Prime Minister MK Yair Lapid, former Defense Minister MK Benny Gantz, and former Finance Minister MK Avigdor Liberman.

Prof.  Manuel Trajtenberg, former Institute for National Security Studies executive director, and Eyal Hulata, former National Security advisor, were two of a long list of security and economics experts participating in the discussions.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee was originally scheduled to appear on the first day of the conference, but did not attend.
