Baltimore, MD - May 4, 2025  - Elevated levels of Legionella bacteria were detected in the water at a Baltimore City Department of Social Services office complex, a spokesperson confirmed Friday.

Test results received April 25 showed above-normal levels of Legionella bacteria in a few isolated locations across the Biddle Street building complex.

Legionella is the bacterium that causes Legionnaires’ disease, a type of severe pneumonia that can be fatal. Nationally, Legionella largely remains unregulated, though a handful of states, including New York and New Jersey, have laws governing it.

After receiving the test results, the department said it is now working with the building’s landlord to implement a “comprehensive remediation plan” that includes disinfection — shock chlorination — and repeated flushing of the water system.
