As part of the tradition of 'Our 6 million' organization, the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, Mr. Danny Danon, along with the Holocaust survivor, Mr. Shraga Milstein, lit a personalized candles in memory of the Milstein family, who perished in the Holocaust, at a ceremony held at the UN this week.
Ambassador Danon addressed the decline of Holocaust memory. "As decades pass, we have trouble remembering what happened. We are the last generation to have the privilege of learning about the Holocaust from those who have had to go through the horrors. As memory begins to fade, so does the possibility of believing that an event like the Holocaust has really taken place. It is harder to believe that the human race is capable of such evil".
The ambassador linked the lack of response from the international community to the rise of anti-Semitism. "In the 1930s, world leaders condemned anti-Semitism, but that was not enough. Even today, condemning anti-Semitism is not enough, it's time for action. Antisemitism is a deadly disease that must be eradicated, and we must vaccinate society so that no one has to suffer its deadly consequences in the future".
During those hours, in many embassies in Israel: the British Ambassador, Neil Wigan, the Canadian Ambassador, Vivian Berkowitz, and the German Ambassador Dr. Susan Wassum-Reiner and others, also lit memorial candles in memory of those who perished, as part of a special tradition instituted by 'Our 6 million' organization, for commemorating the Holocaust for generations following, according to which every year, on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, a candle will be lit in every house to commemorate those who perished in the Holocaust.
In the last number of years the organization has collaborated with many Israeli government officials and dignitaries, including Israeli Prime Minister Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu, President of the State, Reuben Rivlin Knesset Parliamentary members, mayors and municipalities. International recognition was received from United States Second Lady Karen Pence, the French Consulate in Tel Aviv and others.
According to Nora Siperman, CEO of Our 6 Million: "The Holocaust, which brought us to return of the State of Israel, also left an important message which we must pass on - never again. Memory and commemoration are necessary. Firstly, because this is the history of our people and our nation and it must be preserved. Secondly, because only by remembering, will we ensure that such a horrific calamity will not happen again".
Our 6 Million chooses to represent the names of those who perished on candles wrapped with special individual labels that include the known details of a person, whose life was cut short during the holocaust. You can even scan the personalized QR code on the candle to learn more about the story of that individual who perished. To date the organization’s data base of names represents a quarter of a million names with stories. The story of millions of others are waiting to be shared.
Every year, the organization's activities reach more audiences around the world and candles are distributed and purchased by hundreds of thousands of people, educational institutions, public bodies and private companies in Israel and worldwide.
