Baltimore, Md - Jan. 7, 2020 - As the Jewish world celebrated the completion of the 13th Daf Yomi cycle on January 4th 2020, members of Suburban Orthodox and followers of Rabbi Shmuel Silber’s Daf Yomi shiur marked the occasion with a most unique and celebratory Gala Siyum Dinner at the Columbus Center this past Motzaei Shabbos. The evening was a culmination of what had been a full day of celebration.
A siyum was made earlier that Shabbos morning in dedication to the synagogue’s first Executive Director, Mr. Herman Venick, z’l, followed by a meaningful siyum by Mr. Venick’s grandson, Rabbi Reuvein Venick, and a celebratory kiddush. The usual afternoon Daf Yomi class had a higher attendance than usual as shul and community members wanted to join in the excitement of completing Shas. Sunday, January 5th, the Suburban Daf Yomi shiur, generally attended by 50-80 men at 5:45am was overwhelmed by new participants. A total of 140 learners began the 14th cycle of Daf Yomi together in the shul’s main sanctuary rather than their usual Beis Medrash location.
The idea to have Jews from around the world learn one page, the same page, of Talmud Bavli each day, was the brainchild of Rabbi Meir Shapiro, z'tl, in 1923. The initiative was a way to unite the Jewish people, and with more than 90,000 in attendance at Met Life Stadium on January 1st for the global siyum, it has clearly proven to be a success. Completing the entire Shas by learning a page a day is a seven-and-a-half-year commitment, and Suburban was sure to give special recognition to their “mesaymim” (those who completed all the learning) at the Motzaei Shabbos Gala Dinner.
Rabbi Silber noted in his address to the crowd, “The Daf waits for no one.” The achievement of staying current with the daily learning is the achievement of the entire family. In tribute to the wives of the Daf Yomi attendees, and in recognition of their role in the regular attendance of shiur members, the women were presented with inscribed copies of Artscroll’s Candle Lighting Treasury.
Rabbi Silber’s Daf Yomi shiur is one of the most highly attended in the region, and possibly on the East Coast. Through rabbisilber.com and the global podcast, the class reaches thousands more nationally and internationally.
