“Har HaBayit b’yadeinu!”

Baltimore, MD - May 23, 2019 - Those words and those six days were a watershed moment in Jewish history. Many Jews who did not previously identify with their Jewish roots suddenly found themselves thirsting for more, spawning what was known as the ‘Teshuva movement.’ Rav Tzvi Yehuda Kook of Merkaz HaRav went so far as to suggest that since Yerushalayim was now under Jewish sovereignty, k’riyah was no longer obligatory upon seeing the destruction of the Bais HaMikdash. On the opposite extreme, the Satmar Rav saw in the Six Day War something nefarious at work. Whatever conclusions were drawn, something dramatic shifted in the collective Jewish psyche and spirit that has changed the Jewish People forever.

Today, though we yearn for a rebuilt Bais HaMikdash, there is still so much to celebrate. There is an explosion of Torah study in Yerushalayim, new Jewish communities are sprouting up at breakneck speed, and of course, there is the simple, and yet sublime opportunity to daven at the Kotel, an experience that never loses its magic.

On May 31st and June 1st, the Baltimore community will be celebrating the gift of Yerushalayim together as one. Led by Libi Bamizrach, the same organization that recently brought Sivan Rahav Meir to Baltimore, B’nai Jacob Sharei Zion, Ner Tamid, Ohel Moshe, Pikesville Jewish Community (PJC), and Shomrei Emunah will host singers Yitz Henkin and Yehuda Green for spirited Shabbos davening. (Friday night, BJSZ will host Yehuda Green at 7 PM, and PJC will host Yitz Henkin at 7:15 PM. Shabbos morning, Ohel Moshe will host Yitz Henkin at 8:30 AM and Ner Tamid will host Yehuda Green at 9 AM.)

The communal Shabbos will culminate at Shomrei Emunah with a moderated conversation about Eretz Yisrael between Rabbi Moshe Hauer, Rabbi Binyamin Marwick, Rabbi Yisrael Motzen, Rabbi Yechiel Shaffer, and Rabbi Zvi Teichman at 6:45 PM. This will be followed by Mincha (7:45 PM) and at 8:10. Shomrei Emunah’s shalosh seudos which will have singing led by Yehuda Green and Yitz Henkin and Divrei Torah by the Rabbanim.

This is the second major event hosted by Libi Bamizrach, a new local organization, with the stated goal of connecting Baltimoreans with the beauty of and a yearning for Eretz Yisrael. A writing contest, sponsored by Libi Bamirzach, is underway, giving middle and high schoolers a chance to win a free ticket to Eretz Yisrael, and there is much more in store.

Please mark your calendars as this Shabbos promises to be a joyful expression of hakaras hatov for the gift of Yerushalayim and a powerful display of the Baltimore community’s unity.
