Jerusalem, Isral - Feb. 21, 2019 - The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations (COP) led by Chairman Arthur Stark, and CEO Malcolm Hoenlein, concluded its Presidents' Leadership Mission in Jerusalem, Israel, on Thursday evening, at the Inbal Hotel.

The closing panels and speakers discussed antisemitism, BDS, and other global issues involving Jews in Israel and the Diaspora.

 

Highlighted as closing speaker was Elan Carr, the US attorney, appointed on February 5, 2019, by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to serve as the Special Envoy for Monitoring and Combating Antisemitism. Before this appointment, Carr served as deputy district attorney in the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office.  

Carr mentioned his Iraqi Jewish heritage and knowledge of Arabic. His grandfather, a descendant of the Baghdad religious leader Abdallah Somekh, who was a hakham, rosh yeshiva and posek in Iraq, was prosecuted during Iraqi show trials against Jewish community leaders. 

 

Besides his legal career Carr served in the US Military, rising to rank of Major. During the Iraq War, Carr led US soldiers in lighting a Hanukkah menorah in Saddam Hussein's presidential palace.

In his address to the COP in the hotel ballroom, Carr stated "antisemitism is not a Jewish problem, but a human problem."  Among other points, Carr mentioned were anti-Zionism is a form of "Jew hatred" and Zionism did not start 100 years ago, but began with parsha Lech Lecha. 

For the final panel of the conference moderated by Dan Diker, Prof Gerald Steinberg, Ron Brummer, Dr. Michal Hatuel Radoshitzky, and Gerald Ostrow joined Elan Carr on the stage. Each panel member spoke briefly, before audience members were called to ask questions.

Hoenlein in his closing remarks mentioned veteran COP attendee Norma Holzer, who was present at all the sessions.
